Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trend and specific data points for cruise and island visitors. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the description of the data in 2017 is confusing, as the student mentions a total of 2.8 million and 3.5 million in the same paragraph, which creates ambiguity. While the main trends are identified, the reporting of figures is occasionally inaccurate or poorly integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are clearly linked to the correct categories and that the overview provides a more precise summary of the overall trends without contradictory figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'while', and 'after that' are used to connect ideas. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, 'At a glance' is used to introduce a detailed data paragraph rather than an overview. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, making the progression of information feel slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several instances of incorrect word forms and awkward collocations, such as 'flactuatly boost' and 'visitors staying on island were surge'. These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'illustrates', 'compares', and 'approximately', the misuse of verbs and adverbs limits the score. To improve, focus on using correct word forms (e.g., 'surged' instead of 'were surge') and more natural collocations to describe trends in data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'total number of tourists were dramatically increased') and incorrect pluralization or article usage (e.g., '0.3 millions'). While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to be distracting. The student should focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that numerical values are expressed correctly in English (e.g., '0.3 million' rather than '0.3 millions').
