Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or a logical summary of the data. While you identify some figures, the reporting is fragmented and lacks a clear comparison between the categories (cruise ship visitors vs. island stayers). The overview provided at the end is confusing and does not effectively highlight the main trends or significant differences in the data. To improve, ensure you group data logically and provide a clear, concise summary of the main features at the beginning of your report, rather than listing isolated data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. Sentences are often disconnected, and the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'In [year]'. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the data is presented in a disjointed manner. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'meanwhile') to connect your sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic verbs like 'was', 'were', and 'have' to describe trends, which does not demonstrate the range required for higher bands. Phrases like 'huge increase' and 'slightly up' are used repeatedly. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'at the last of 2017' (should be 'by the end of 2017') and 'recover the visitor' (should be 'recover in visitor numbers'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive terms for trends is essential.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the number of the tourists were', 'the visitors are slightly decreased') and tense inconsistencies. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, which occasionally makes the meaning difficult to grasp. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and practice using a variety of sentence structures, such as relative clauses or participial phrases, to describe the data more fluently.
