IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

So now we summarize the people who visited the Caribbean island between the years 2010 to 2017. So in the 2010 about 1 million people but one fourth of the people stay on cruise ships and remaining people stayed on the island. In 2011 about 1.25 million people visited that island and about half million people stayed on the cruise ships and others stayed on the island. In 2012 about 1.5 million people visited again on that island but one fourth of million people stayed on cruise ships and remaining stayed on the island. In the year 2013 about 2 million people visited that island and about 1.5 million people stayed on the island and the others on the cruise ships. So in the year 2014 about 2.5 million people visited that island and about 1.5 million people stayed on the island and others on the cruise ships. And the ratio of visitors on island is increasing every year but in the last year 2017 about 3.5 million people visited that island. So the island become famous in every year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the data, but it lacks a clear overview or summary of the main trends. The information is presented as a list of data points for each year, which is repetitive and fails to highlight the 'main features' or make meaningful comparisons as required by the prompt. For example, instead of synthesizing the data, you list each year individually (e.g., 'In 2011...', 'In 2012...'). To improve, you should group data points to identify broader trends, such as the overall growth in visitor numbers or the shifting proportion of cruise ship passengers versus island-staying tourists.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks paragraphing, which is essential for organizing a report. The text is written as a single block, making it difficult to follow. Furthermore, the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical; almost every sentence begins with 'So' or 'In the year'. There is no logical progression or clear structure. To achieve a higher band, you should organize your report into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and one or two body paragraphs that group related data, using a wider variety of linking words like 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'meanwhile'.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the same phrases, such as 'visited that island' and 'stayed on the island'. There is little attempt to use academic vocabulary or synonyms to describe trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'surged'). The phrasing 'one fourth of million' is also inaccurate and awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for data description, such as 'the number of visitors rose steadily' or 'a significant proportion of tourists'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There are several errors in article usage and sentence structure, such as 'In the 2010 about 1 million people' (missing verb) and 'the island become famous in every year' (incorrect tense and preposition). The reliance on simple sentence structures prevents you from demonstrating the complex grammatical control required for higher bands. Focus on using a mix of complex sentences, such as using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent.
