Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, but it lacks a clear overview and fails to effectively highlight key trends or comparisons. The data is presented in a mechanical, year-by-year list, which makes it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall progression of tourism on the island. While the prompt asks for a summary, the response reads more like a raw data transcription. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in the reporting of figures (e.g., stating '2.5% people visited' in 2014 when the graph shows millions). To improve, you should group data by trends rather than listing every year individually and include a clear summary statement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks paragraphing, which is essential for organizing information in an IELTS Task 1 report. The flow of ideas is repetitive, relying on simple chronological markers like 'In the year 2012', 'In the year 2013', and 'Furthermore'. There is a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices to link ideas or contrast the two categories (cruise vs. island visitors). The progression is purely linear and mechanical, which hinders the overall coherence of the report. Using a wider range of linking words and structuring the response into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs would significantly improve the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases such as 'people stayed on the cruise' and 'people stayed on the island' are used throughout the text without variation. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'living cruise' instead of 'staying on a cruise' and 'total 2.5% people visited'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to use synonyms like 'vacationers', 'tourists', 'accommodated', 'resided', or 'fluctuated' to describe the data more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with prepositions ('visited on Caribbean Island', 'stayed at cruise'), article usage, and subject-verb agreement ('visitors visits'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and spaces (e.g., 'In ,2010'). To reach a higher band, you need to focus on mastering basic sentence construction and reducing the frequency of errors in basic grammar, while also attempting more complex structures like relative clauses or passive voice.
