Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the graph. However, the data interpretation is frequently inaccurate. For example, the student claims that in 2010, 'almost double' the number of visitors stayed on their own compared to ships, which contradicts the visual data. Furthermore, the description of trends is confusing; the student mentions a 'dip in 2011' for cruise ships, whereas the graph shows a clear upward trend. The overview is present but lacks precision, and the reporting of figures is inconsistent with the provided graph. To improve, ensure that data points are read accurately and that trends are described with greater clarity and factual correctness.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'Overall'. However, the logical progression is often hindered by unclear referencing and confusing data reporting. For instance, the transition between the 2010 data and the 2011-2012 period is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and the lack of clarity in the data presentation makes it difficult to follow the development of the argument. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that the information is grouped logically would enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student uses basic terms like 'increased', 'static', and 'number' repeatedly. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'Caribeans's', 'visted', 'cursie', 'exlpore', and 'jounery', which occasionally impede readability. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'cruise ships' and 'visitors', the overall control is weak. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using a wider variety of synonyms for trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable') and ensure accurate spelling of key terms related to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'The line graphs illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'the figures of tourists visited on island' (preposition and article errors), and 'a gradually increased can be seen' (incorrect word form). Punctuation is also inconsistent, and there are several instances of awkward phrasing that make the meaning difficult to grasp. While the errors do not completely prevent communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. Focusing on basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
