Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the start and end years. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, simply listing figures without fully synthesising the information. For instance, the statement that the number of visitors 'lived on island' is slightly inaccurate as the graph refers to 'visitors staying on island'. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between the two categories could be more sophisticated. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated to highlight the most significant differences rather than just stating that one is higher than the other.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'At the beginning of the period' and 'Over the period of time' are used, but the transition between sentences often feels disjointed. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the overview and the body paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking words to connect the trends described. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of repetitive phrasing, such as 'number of visitors' and 'increase'. The student uses basic verbs like 'increase' and 'reach' repeatedly. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'styed' (spelling) and 'lived on island' (collocation), which should be 'stayed on the island'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'surpassed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'number of visitors... have increasing trend') and article usage (e.g., 'lived on island'). Tense usage is generally consistent, but there are errors in prepositional phrases and pluralisation. These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
