Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the total number of visitors and the breakdown between cruise ship and island-staying tourists. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and at times inaccurate. For example, stating that the total number of visitors 'was 1 millions' in 2010 is imprecise, and the description of the trends between 2013 and 2017 is somewhat vague. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and the failure to clearly highlight the most significant trends (such as the overall growth) prevents a higher score. The overview is also very brief and lacks a clear summary of the most striking differences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused. Phrases like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are used, but the internal flow of sentences is frequently interrupted by fragmented punctuation, such as '1 millions. and the next years'. This makes the text feel disjointed. Referencing is also unclear at times, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the years and the data points is confusing. The overall progression of ideas is present but lacks the logical flow required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic terms like 'numbers', 'year', and 'millions'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'it ware rose up' and 'it were flucluated'. These errors, combined with the repetitive nature of the vocabulary, indicate a limited range that is just adequate for the task. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise verbs to describe trends, such as 'surged', 'plummeted', or 'remained constant', rather than repeating 'went up' or 'came down'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('it ware rose up', 'it were flucluated') and pluralisation ('1 millions'). Punctuation is a significant weakness, with many sentences ending prematurely or being incorrectly separated by periods, such as 'The year 2010 and 2011. However, the year between 2012 to 2017. it were flucluated'. The range of structures is limited to simple sentences, and attempts at more complex constructions are consistently inaccurate. Significant improvement in basic sentence construction and punctuation is necessary.
