Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for 2010 and 2017. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the mention of 2011 data is specific, but the description of the trends between 2013 and 2015 is vague, and the summary of the total visitor growth is accurate but lacks a more detailed breakdown of the intermediate years. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key features are highlighted with consistent precision and that the comparison between the two categories (cruise vs. island stay) is more thoroughly developed throughout the period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2011', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the transition between the 2011 data and the 2013-2015 period feels abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be more effectively used to separate the distinct trends of the two visitor types to improve the logical progression of the information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'data has been calibrated in millions' (which is technically incorrect in this context) and 'people's who choose'. The use of 'mixed pattern' is a bit vague. While the student attempts to use specific terms like 'upward trend' and 'consecutive years', the overall lexical control is limited. To improve, focus on using more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends, and ensure correct pluralization and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'number of people visited' (should be 'visiting'), 'total number of visitor... has rose' (should be 'visitors... has risen'), and '0.5 millions people's who choose'. These errors in subject-verb agreement, verb tense, and pluralization are noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for tense consistency would be highly beneficial.
