Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the overall upward trend and the final figures. However, the report suffers from significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, stating that cruise ship visitors 'inclined by 3 million' in 2011 is factually incorrect based on the provided graph, as the total figures do not reach such high numbers. Furthermore, the description of the trends is often confusing, and the distinction between the two categories is not always clear. To improve, ensure that data points are read accurately and that the summary highlights the most significant trends rather than listing every year's figures, which can lead to confusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is frequently interrupted by unclear referencing and awkward transitions. Phrases like 'At the fleeting glance' are misused, and the connection between sentences is often mechanical. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices, they are frequently inaccurate or inappropriate for the context. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the necessary flow to guide the reader through the data effectively. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one is essential for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, with several instances of awkward word choice. For example, 'traveller lived on cruise ships' is unnatural; 'staying' or 'visiting' would be more appropriate. There are also errors in collocation, such as 'total of these places' and 'minor difference'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the reliance on basic vocabulary prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'experienced a steady rise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'number of traveller visiting'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward sentence structures. The use of articles is also inconsistent. While the writer attempts some complex sentences, they are often marred by errors, such as 'the tourist visiting cruise ships and on islands ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 million and its total also is 1 million'. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and pluralisation would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
