Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and successfully selected key data points to support your description. The comparison between total visitors, island-staying visitors, and cruise ship passengers is well-integrated. You have correctly identified the main features, such as the significant overall increase and the contrasting trends between the two categories of tourists. The data is accurate and supports the summary well. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the specific years mentioned in the graph to avoid any ambiguity in the timeline.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Finally', and 'while' are used appropriately to link information. The flow between sentences is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent, and the information is presented in a way that is easy for the reader to follow. No significant issues with cohesion were noted.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends accurately, such as 'remained fairly stable', 'increased considerably', and 'rose gradually'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is natural. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the fluctuations in the data, such as 'fluctuated marginally' or 'experienced a sharp surge', which would demonstrate a more flexible control of language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The number of visitors staying on the island remained fairly stable after 2013, while the number of cruise ship visitors increased considerably.' Punctuation is accurate, and the sentences are generally error-free. The grammar is consistent throughout the report. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or participle clauses, to add more sophistication to your writing.
