Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you identify the two categories of visitors, the analysis is incomplete. The description of the data is fragmented, and the summary ends abruptly mid-sentence, meaning the trends are not fully reported or compared. To improve, ensure you provide a complete overview of the data, including all time periods, and avoid leaving sentences unfinished. You must also ensure that all key features are described clearly to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transition between ideas is mechanical and disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited, and the abrupt ending makes the overall structure feel incomplete. To improve, use linking words such as 'furthermore', 'in contrast', or 'consequently' to connect your sentences more fluidly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the information is presented in a way that is easy for the reader to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple phrasing like 'common' or 'increase'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'living on Caribbean island', which is inaccurate in the context of tourism. Spelling errors, such as 'visting' and 'noticable', further detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and ensure you proofread your work for spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and article usage (e.g., 'the most tourists', 'it increase', 'the visitors are hardly'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, and the lack of control over complex sentences limits the range. The incomplete final sentence also creates a grammatical breakdown. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past data. Practice constructing more complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
