Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, providing an overview and mentioning data points for total tourists, those staying on the island, and those on cruises. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data (for instance, mixing up categories and confusing specific trends). The introduction incorrectly mentions 'staying partten', and the body paragraphs contain contradictory statements regarding tourist numbers. While an overall trend is identified, the lack of precision and inaccurate reporting of figures mean the response only partially satisfies the requirements. To reach a higher band, the student must carefully check the visual data against their written sentences to ensure accurate representation of trends and numbers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is structured into an introduction and body paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at paragraphing. However, the logical progression is frequently hindered by confusing referencing and repetitive phrasing, such as 'visitors staying on island' being repeated awkwardly. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly (e.g., 'On the other hand' and 'By contrast' are mixed up and applied clumsily). Paragraphing could also be improved by dedicating distinct paragraphs to separate categories rather than grouping contradictory and confusing information together. Overall arrangement is somewhat coherent, but cohesion is often faulty, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words like 'surpassed', 'skyrocketing', 'marginal incline', and 'rebounded'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('partten' for pattern, 'preffer', 'amn', 'contant', 'fall' instead of fell, 'than' instead of then) and instances of inaccurate word choice. Collocations are sometimes awkward. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a general meaning, the frequency of lexical and spelling errors limits the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising conjunctions and transitional clauses. However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors including tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'it rise moderately', 'it fall', 'it had a significant rise... and again it remained constant... before it fall'), missing articles, and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation. These grammatical errors occur frequently and occasionally impede smooth reading, justifying a Band 5.0.
