Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to report the main features of the graph, identifying the trends for visitors staying on cruise ships, visitors staying on the island, and the total number of visitors between 2010 and 2017. However, the response suffers from significant data inaccuracies and confusion regarding the figures. For instance, the text states that in 2016 the number of visitors staying on cruise ships was '1.5 millions to 2 million in 2017', and mentions a year '2018' which is not present in the provided graph. Furthermore, the overview sentence is grammatically garbled and difficult to parse. While the general trends are mentioned, the specific data reporting is unreliable and contains contradictory or invented numbers, limiting the task achievement to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific data. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor referencing, confusing cohesive devices, and broken sentence structures. The overview contains severe cohesion issues, such as 'the values of tourists travelling a Caribbean island total numbers of tourist were increased, while visitons staying on island was fluctuated.' Transitions like 'Tuning to the remaining details' are awkward or misused. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak and mechanical, resulting in a score of Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and often inaccurate. There are numerous spelling and word-form errors throughout the text, such as 'visitons' instead of visitors, 'cusitons' instead of customers or tourists, 'chip' instead of ship, and 'melio' instead of million. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data reporting like 'fluctuated', but misspells it repeatedly as 'flucated'. Due to the frequent lexical errors and limited control over word choice, which occasionally impede the reader's understanding, this criterion is awarded a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences almost uniformly result in severe errors. There are constant issues with subject-verb agreement and passive/active voice, such as 'the figures of visitors... was accounted for', 'visitors staying on cruise chip was stood at', and 'the total number of visitors on island was stood at'. Tense usage is also confused and erratic. Because errors are frequent, systematic, and often cause difficulty for the reader, the grammatical performance falls into Band 4.0.
