Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying the two categories of visitors (cruise ship passengers and island stayers) and mentioning overall trends and endpoints. However, the information is presented somewhat disjointedly and contains inaccuracies regarding data points. For example, the student states that in 2013 visitors staying on the island reached a peak with around 1.5 million, and also mentions that 2017 was the peak for total visitors at around 3.5 million. Furthermore, the overview is rather basic and lacks a fully developed comparative summary of the main trends. Therefore, the response fulfills the basic requirements of Task Achievement but remains at a Band 5.5 level due to under-developed highlights and slight data misinterpretations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs. However, the overall progression lacks clear logical flow. The division of body paragraphs feels slightly disorganised, with repetitive referencing such as 'over the time' appearing multiple times in close proximity. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly, as seen with 'Additionally' and 'However', and the colon usage in the third paragraph disrupts sentence flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical links between sentences need greater clarity and varied cohesive devices to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive vocabulary set to describe data trends, such as 'increased rapidly', 'escalated sharply', and 'reached on its peak'. There are also frequent issues with collocation and prepositional usage, including 'came on a trip a specific Caribbean island', 'stayed on island' (missing articles), and 'fallowed by' (spelling error for followed). While the language is minimally adequate to convey basic trends, the lexical range lacks flexibility and precision, and errors in word choice are noticeable throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complexity are marred by grammatical errors. Examples include 'The line graph illustrated' (tense inconsistency), 'the number of tourists came' (missing relative pronoun or participle), and 'tourist who stayed' (singular noun with plural context). Prepositions and articles are frequently misused or omitted, as seen in 'was decided to stay' and 'on its peak'. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.
