Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying the overall upward trend and mentioning visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total visitors. However, the description of specific data points is confusing and inaccurate in places, such as stating that cruise ship visitors reached 0.5 million and then 'reach tp 1 million in 2014' before ending at 2 million. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 128 words, falling well short of the 150-word minimum. Due to the under-length penalty and incomplete development of key data comparisons, this criterion is awarded a band 4.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear paragraph structure, presenting a single block of text after a brief introductory sentence, which hinders the logical flow. While basic cohesive devices and transition words like 'Overall' are used, the relationships between sentences are often strained due to confusing grammar and referencing errors. For instance, sentences run together without clear punctuation boundaries, making it difficult to follow the progression of information. Paragraphing is insufficient for an Academic Task 1 response, resulting in a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('ilustrates', 'paryicular', 'caribbran', 'incresing') and awkward word choices ('most popular data'). The writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'tourists', 'cruise ships', and 'visitor', but the range is limited and minimally adequate. Word forms and collocations are frequently inaccurate, as seen in phrases like 'reach into peak' or 'visitors who staying'. These limitations restrict the lexical score to a band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical structures attempted are largely simple and prone to frequent errors. There is a noticeable lack of control over verb tenses and relative clauses, demonstrated by frequent faulty constructions such as 'who staying on cruise ships who are visitors staying on island' and 'has slowly increasing'. Punctuation is also weak, resulting in run-on sentences that lack necessary commas or full stops. Because frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and simple forms dominate, this warrants a band 4.5.
