Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, noting the overall upward trend in total visitor numbers from 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the task requirements due to severely restricted development and several inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the commentary on cruise ship visitors and island-stay visitors is extremely disjointed, poorly phrased, and difficult to follow. The overview is weak, appearing as an isolated, ungrammatical sentence rather than a cohesive summary of major trends. While the student identifies the starting and ending points of the total figures, the lack of clear comparisons and the dense, confusing descriptions of the sub-categories prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the text is hindered by poor paragraphing and a lack of logical progression. The response is divided into very short, fragmented paragraphs, with the body of the text lumped into a single dense and confusing block. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'To start,' 'Turning to the point,' and 'these values,' which fail to establish clear logical links between sentences. The sequencing of ideas jumps abruptly between the different categories of tourists without clear transitions, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the intended comparisons. Referencing is also problematic, as pronouns and demonstratives often lack clear antecedents, contributing to a disjointed reading experience that matches the descriptors for Band 4.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is highly repetitive and basic, relying heavily on words directly copied from the prompt such as 'tourists,' 'visitors,' 'Caribbean island,' and 'line graph.' There is a severe lack of lexical range, and numerous awkward word choices or unidiomatic phrases appear throughout the text, such as 'the total million of visitors had increased,' 'visitors staying on cruise ships million of visitors,' and 'extent increased.' Spelling is generally accurate for basic words, but the inappropriate use of terms like 'extent' instead of 'significantly' or 'considerably' demonstrates a very limited control over lexical selection. Overall, the vocabulary is just about adequate to convey a basic topic, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are marred by severe structural errors. There is a complete absence of error-free sentences. Frequent grammatical mistakes include missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and severe syntactic confusion, such as 'the total million of visitors had increased from 2010 to 2017' and 'tourists much gradually increasing from o.5 to 5 in 2013 to 2017' (where the figure 5 is an inaccurate transcription of the graph). Punctuation is also erratic, with random capitalizations and comma splices. These pervasive errors frequently distort meaning and cause significant difficulty for the reader, aligning with the descriptors for Band 4.
