Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, including trends for visitors staying on cruise ships, visitors staying on the island, and the total number of visitors between 2010 and 2017. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the total travellers had the highest figure in 2010 and surged rapidly, whereas the graph shows it started at 1 million and rose steadily to 3.5 million. Furthermore, some trend descriptions are contradictory or confused, such as stating that total guests fell sharply when the graph shows a general upward trajectory. The overview captures some broad patterns but contains factual errors regarding the data presented in the visual. Therefore, the response only partially satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement, earning a band score of 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework for Task 1. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by imprecise referencing and awkward cohesive devices. Words like 'furthermore' and 'whereas' are used mechanically or inappropriately, and the transitions between sentences do not always maintain a clear logical thread. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is weak, making it difficult to follow the relationships between the different data series. As a result, the coherence and cohesion of the response align best with a band score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate basic concepts related to data reporting, utilizing terms such as 'rise', 'peak', 'constant', and 'upward trend'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'caribbean' with a lowercase letter, 'intially', 'tourist', 'continous', 'rapidy', 'untill', and 'lightly'. Furthermore, collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'number of participants' when referring to tourists. Although the meaning remains mostly clear despite these slips, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies limits the score to a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting complex forms with clauses like 'although they saw a downward trend which then later fluctuated'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the essay. There are frequent subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'The graph illustrate', 'visitors... had the least number of visitors', and 'Total travellers has'. Punctuation and capitalization errors are also noticeable, and awkward phrasing leads to grammatical strain in sentences like 'In 2010 tourist on the cruise ship saw a sharp increase... and came to a fall in 2012.' Due to these persistent errors and limited control over complex structures, the grammatical range and accuracy score is 5.0.
