Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the three categories shown in the line graph. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, outlining the general trends for cruise ship passengers, island stay visitors, and total visitors. However, there are some inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the student states that visitors staying on cruise ships had the 'highest trend between 2013 to 2017,' whereas the chart shows that island stay visitors and total visitors remained higher in volume. Furthermore, minor data points contain slight generalisations or imprecise readings. Overall, the response fulfills the basic requirements of Task 1, but the analytical errors prevent it from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is structured into four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. There is a basic overall arrangement, using introductory phrases such as 'Overall,' and transitional words like 'Whereas' and 'Morever.' However, cohesion is often mechanical, faulty, or confusing. For example, the phrase 'On other side' is non-standard, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'line show' without clear antecedents). Paragraphing is attempted, but logical progression between ideas is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and awkward transitions. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary, relying heavily on basic words and phrases such as 'trend,' 'number of tourists,' and 'visitors.' There are frequent lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates,' 'caribbean islan' instead of 'Caribbean island,' 'doted' instead of 'dotted,' 'errow' instead of 'arrow,' and 'Morever' instead of 'Moreover.' Word choice is often imprecise or incorrect, such as using 'trend' to describe numerical values ('highest trend between 2013 to 2017 from number of visitors 0.5 to 2 million'). This vocabulary level is adequate for basic communication but contains noticeable errors, aligning with Band 4.5 to 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures frequently result in grammatical errors. There are numerous subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'The line graph illustrate,' 'visitor... have lowest trend') and missing articles ('number of tourists visiting caribbean islan'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing capitalisation on proper nouns like 'Caribbean' and run-on or poorly structured clauses. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over basic grammar, fitting the Band 4.5 to 5.0 criteria.
