Student answer (Band 4.5)
This is a pictorial representation of line chart showing touristry while going to renowned Carribbean Island during 2010 to 2017. The x-axis reflects years whereas y-axis depicts visitant in millions. The chart displays three trends named as guests who will be living on large ships, far away isolated land and total.
It is evident that total would be higher, as it is the sum of people spending time on cruise and on island. The movement for choosing separte land surrounding with water bodies has been in demand for majority of time, though it dipped in year 2016. The tendency for relying on enormous ships took years to be on preference for populace, who is travelling.
However, it is noticed that a steep rise was illustrated for individuals selecting enlarged cruises, ranging from the year 2012 until 2017. Although there was shift in choices as per facilities provided, hence lead to changing of view while being in motion. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to summarise the visual data, but the response falls short of fully satisfying the requirements of Task Achievement. While the introductory sentence attempts to paraphrase the prompt, the selection of main features is disjointed and lacks precision. The student mentions 'guests who will be living on large ships' and 'far away isolated land', but fails to report specific data points, trends, or meaningful comparisons across the years provided (2010 to 2017). Furthermore, the final paragraph drifts away from objective reporting into irrelevant speculation and commentary, such as 'interpreting a good idea for starting a new venture on the basis of today's world taste,' which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. The overall progression lacks a clear overview of the main trends shown in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, providing a basic framework, but the logical organisation and progression are weak. The introduction is awkwardly phrased and the transition between sentences feels disjointed. Cohesive devices are used inconsistently or incorrectly, such as 'Although there was shift in choices as per facilities provided, hence lead to changing of view', which creates confusing relationships between ideas. Referencing is also unclear in places, making it difficult to follow the progression of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the body paragraphs is disrupted by grammatical confusion and abrupt shifts in topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The lexical range is extremely limited and heavily reliant on unnatural phrasing and circumlocution. Instead of standard terminology from the chart, the student uses awkward non-standard expressions such as 'touristry', 'visitant', 'far away isolated land', and 'enormous ships'. There are also frequent word choice and collocation errors that obscure the intended meaning. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary, the usage is inaccurate and inappropriate for an academic context, significantly straining the reader's comprehension.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and awkwardly constructed complex sentences. There are frequent, heavy grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense confusion ('guests who will be living'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions ('in year 2016', 'on preference'), and faulty verb forms ('hence lead to changing'). Many sentences contain structural errors that impede communication and make the underlying meaning difficult to decipher. Punctuation is basic and sometimes mishandled.
