Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, outlining data trends for visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total figures between 2010 and 2017. However, the overview is somewhat confused, incorrectly stating that visitors staying on cruise ships showed the highest numbers at the end of the period when the total was actually higher, and mischaracterising the island visitors' trend as fluctuating slightly when it remained relatively stable after an initial rise. Furthermore, there are several inaccurate data citations, such as reporting 0.3 instead of 0.25 in 2010 and stating it dropped to 0.2 in 2012 when the graph shows 0.25. While the response attempts all parts of the task, the inaccuracies in data interpretation and overview pull the score down to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the categories. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing choices and confusing transitional structures. The overview contains grammatical fragments and lacks cohesion, while the body paragraphs lack smooth transitions between data points, often presenting a continuous stream of figures with inadequate linking devices. Pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, and repetitive sentence structures ('In 2010...', 'Total stated around...') create a mechanical flow. Overall, the organizational framework demonstrates basic coherence, but cohesive devices are inaccurate or overused, aligning with Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary suitable for Task 1, relying on basic terms such as 'illustrates', 'visitors', 'highest numbers', and 'increased'. There are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'garph', 'milions', 'visting', 'caribbean', 'flactuate', 'approximetely', 'Similaraly', and 'suar'. Attempts at less common vocabulary or collocation are either incorrect or marred by spelling mistakes. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, the frequency of lexical and spelling errors impedes smooth reading, making Band 5.0 an appropriate descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that result in major structural errors, such as missing subjects, incorrect verb tenses, and faulty subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Total stated around 1 million visitors', 'visitors staying on cruise ship started... after gradually rose'). Punctuation is weak, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and missing full stops between independent clauses. Grammatical errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptor well.
