Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all major trends shown in the line graph, including data for cruise ship visitors, island stay visitors, and the total figures between 2010 and 2017. An overview is present at the beginning, noting the upward trajectory of cruise and total visitors alongside the fluctuating nature of island visitors. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in reporting specific figures—for instance, stating that cruise ship visitors dropped to 0.2 million in 2012 when the graph shows 0.25, and claiming a dramatic decrease where fluctuations are minor. Furthermore, the description becomes overly granular and mechanical, listing nearly every data point rather than selecting and reporting the main features effectively. Because of these data misreadings and a lack of well-synthesized comparisons, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into multiple paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the categories. However, logical progression is hindered by poor referencing and mechanical listing of data points. Cohesive devices are minimal or awkwardly used, such as starting sentences abruptly with phrases like 'As can bs seen, staying on cruise ship, In 2010...' or 'Moreover, vistiors staying on island, this started...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas lacks cohesion and clarity, leading to a disjointed reading experience. The lack of smooth transitions between sentences and ideas places this text firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and word-choice errors that stem from a limited range. Examples of spelling errors include 'illustrate' (used as 'illustrate'), 'reagarding', 'touists', 'visting', 'decreas', 'dramactic', 'vistiors', 'increas', 'rapdily', and 'higest'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatic decrease' and 'gradually increase', but these are undermined by mechanical repetition and inaccurate forms. While the meaning is generally discernible despite the frequent errors, the lexical control is restricted, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The given line graph illustrate', 'these was a dramactic decreas', 'it stay as it is', 'it show slightly decreas'), fragment sentences ('While, staying on island decreas at the end through out the time period.'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also erratic, with misplaced commas and capitalisation errors mid-sentence. These persistent errors cause frequent strain for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.0 an appropriate score.
