Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting information from the line chart, including an overview and some data points for cruise ship visitors, island visitors, and the total. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and misreadings of the data. For example, the student states that most tourists were very interested in staying on cruise ships initially, whereas the graph clearly shows that island-staying visitors were higher in the early years (2010–2011). Furthermore, the word count is 144 words, which falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, resulting in a penalty. The overview is overly simplistic and contains vague phrasing. To reach a higher band, the student must accurately report the key trends without factual errors and fully meet the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four short paragraphs, representing an attempt at logical organisation. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and poor logical sequencing. For instance, sentences such as 'To start with, staying on cruise ships, in 2010, it starts with...' are disjointed and difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and inaccurately, such as 'Moving further, total...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, making the overall structure difficult to navigate. Improving the flow between sentences and using clearer reference words would significantly enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'increase', 'rise', and 'visitors'. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'interested staying' instead of 'interested in staying', and 'significantly increase' used as a noun instead of 'a significant increase'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic trends, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider variety of synonyms and learn appropriate word forms and verb-adverb collocations for describing data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The writing exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are numerous grammatical inaccuracies, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and faulty sentence construction (e.g., 'the information about how many tourist visited Caribean islands' and 'after stable it increased again'). Pluralisation errors are also present, such as 'most of the tourist'. Complex structures are attempted but are almost invariably faulty. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth comprehension. Greater attention to basic sentence architecture and grammatical accuracy is essential.
