Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to report the main features and trends of the graph, covering visitors on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total figures between 2010 and 2017. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that visitors on cruise ships in 2010 were 'about 250k' and increased to '0.5 million in 2011', whereas the transcription shows cruise ship visitors at 0.25 million in 2010, rising to 0.5 million, but then fluctuating in ways that are misreported. Furthermore, terminology is mixed up, such as referring to visitor counts in lakhs ('5 lacs') and percentages ('its percentage was commence from 250k'). An overview is attempted in the conclusion, but overall the task is only partially addressed due to data inaccuracies and confusion over units.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, attempting to group data chronologically. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, repetitive phrasing ('The total of it...'), and weak linking devices ('According to the graph in 2010 to 2012', 'By contrast the graph between 2013 and 2015'). Paragraphing is present but internal cohesion is mechanical and often faulty. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which data series the student is discussing. This level of organisation corresponds to a Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very limited and sometimes inappropriate for an academic task. The student relies on informal expressions, non-standard numbering terms ('5 lacs'), and repetitive language ('tourists staying on island', 'total of it'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'shapy increases', 'lil bit', and 'willingness interest of visiting'. Spelling errors also occur ('millIon', 'millIons'). While the basic topic vocabulary is present, the range is restricted and errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing it firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as tense inconsistencies ('visitors staying on island were remain same'), incorrect prepositions ('in 2010 to 2012'), and malformed structures ('its percentage was commence from 250k to 1.5 million'). Punctuation and capitalization errors are also visible ('millIon', 'millIons'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
