Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and totals for each category shown on the graph between 2010 and 2017. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, capturing the overall upward trajectory. Key data points, such as the starting and ending figures and crossover points, are generally included. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reading specific data points, such as stating that visitors staying on cruise ships were 'not more than 0.5 millions' in 2010 when the chart shows 0.25 million, and slight imprecisions with dates and figures. Despite these minor lapses, the main trends are adequately covered, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is structured into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs focusing on cruise ship visitors, island stay visitors, and total visitors respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, the logical flow and cohesion are frequently hindered by awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, and repetitive use of cohesive devices like 'and then experienced'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and transitions between sentences feel mechanical rather than fluid. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent arrangement, but the faulty cohesion places it firmly at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'dramatical rise', 'substaintial growth', and 'noticable growth'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'vists', 'carribean', 'begning', 'toursit', 'Incontrast', and spelling slips like 'substaintal'. Word formation and collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'visitors staying of island'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, the frequent errors in spelling and word choice prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation (e.g., 'Numbers of vistors staying on cruise ship was quite low in the begning of period then experienced a dramatical rise'). Verb tense consistency is also problematic in places. While simple structures are generally understandable, the high frequency of grammatical errors and lack of error-free complex sentences mean the writing sits at Band 5.0.
