Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, providing an overview and selecting data points such as the figures for 2010 and 2017. However, the overview is poorly expressed ("Total of visitors largest throughout the period"), and the data selection contains numerous inaccuracies and misreadings of the graph. For instance, the student states that visitors staying on the island decreased in 2016 by "approxemately 0.2 millions," whereas the graph shows a drop from 1.5 million to 1.25 million. Furthermore, the description of the total number of visitors is very confused and difficult to follow. Consequently, the response achieves a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs, which is positive, but the internal organisation and logical progression are frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and faulty referencing. Sentences are often crammed with multiple data points linked clumsily by comma splices or basic conjunctions (e.g., "in 2010, tourist stayed on island stood at around 0.8 million, this figure remained same in 2011, while it increased with 1.3 milion in 2012..."). Paragraphing is rudimentary, and the relationship between ideas is often unclear, resulting in a Band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student's vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation. Examples include "visitors came to visit" (redundant), "peoples" (incorrect plural), "vale" instead of value, and "approxemately" (spelling error). Phrases like "dramatically high in all years" and "end with 2 millions people" demonstrate limited control over lexical items and phrasing. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, the numerous inaccuracies place this at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or poorly constructed compound-complex sentences with missing articles and incorrect prepositions. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency (e.g., "visitors who's stayed in cruise ships was fluctuate", "tourist stayed on island stood"). Punctuation is also weak, with widespread comma splices connecting independent clauses. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.
