Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting on the number of tourists visiting the Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. An overview is attempted in the second sentence, noting the distinction between cruise ship visitors and those staying on the island. However, the data reporting contains several inaccuracies and imprecise figures when compared against the visual data. For instance, the student states that 0.4 million visitors on cruise ships visited in 2010, whereas the actual figure is approximately 0.25 million. Additionally, the overview lacks clarity and fails to highlight the total trend effectively. Key features such as the overall upward trajectory and the distinct divergence of the two categories are mentioned, but the lack of precise data interpretation and underdeveloped supporting details place this response in Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text exhibits some organizational structure with an introductory sentence, a body section, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with a run-on block of text forming the main body paragraphs without clear logical separation of the different tourist categories. Cohesive devices are mechanical and sometimes inaccurate or misused, such as repetitive transitions like 'Moreover' and 'On the other hand' which do not always connect ideas smoothly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact comparison between groups. Overall, cohesion is faulty and mechanical, aligning with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student displays a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary adequate for basic communication, but makes frequent spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the quality. Examples of misspellings and lexical errors include 'comaprision', 'carribbean', 'criuse', 'slowely', 'visitoir', 'werer', and 'intrested'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary phrases like 'trend line', inaccurate word choices and frequent spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the flow. The lexical resource demonstrates characteristics typical of a Band 5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include 'the graph showed us information about the visitors who were staying on criuse ship, along with the travellers were staying on island', 'the visitoir on the caribbean island is increased', and 'visitors were stayed on the island was seemd to be less as comapre to above trend line.' Subject-verb agreement errors, tense inconsistencies, and incorrect passive voice constructions are frequent throughout the response, causing considerable difficulty for the reader and restricting the score to Band 4.5, which rounds to Band 5.
