Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and detailing the trends for visitors staying on cruise ships, visitors staying on the island, and the total number of tourists. Key data points such as the initial figures in 2010 (1 million total, 0.75 million on the island, and 0.25 million on cruise ships), the peak at 3.5 million in 2017, and the crossover point in 2016 are accurately reported. The overview correctly identifies that the total remained higher than the individual categories and highlights the starting position of cruise ship visitors. The response fulfils all requirements of Task 1 effectively, warranting a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is logically organised into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that discuss the different tourist categories in detail. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2010', 'Meanwhile', 'Afterward', and 'Subsequently' are used to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate overall trends from specific figures. While referencing is generally clear, occasional awkward phrasing in transitions prevents it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the logical progression is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for Task 1, including terms such as 'depicts', 'accounted for', 'significant increase', 'fluctuations', 'upward trend', and 'overtaking'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Caribean' (Caribbean), 'begining' (beginning), 'heigher' (higher), 'then' (than), 'ramained' (remained), 'upwrod' (upward), 'stablized' (stabilised), and 'tough' (though). These lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band, although communication is not impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and time markers successfully (e.g., 'The diagram depicts how many tourists visited a particular Caribbean island...'). There are frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, such as missing articles ('at lowest point', 'for a year'), incorrect prepositions or conjunctions ('reached to the peak', 'reached to the 1.5 million'), and spelling/typographical errors. Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are understandable, and complex structures are attempted with adequate control.
