Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main features of the line graph showing visitors to a Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, noting the overall increase. However, there are several inaccuracies and contradictions in the data reported. For instance, the student states that the number of visitors staying on the island reached 1.5 million in 2017 'more than double its starting figure', but starts at 0.7 million, and later confuses the total visitor figures with the individual categories. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or contradictory. Because of these inaccuracies and some confusion in reporting the trends, the response satisfies the criteria for Band 5.5, rounded to 5.0 or 6.0; here, Band 5.0 reflects the partial misinterpretation of the data and lack of clarity in some comparative features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is arranged into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the categories. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or mechanically (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally'). Paragraphing is present, but the body paragraphs contain mixed ideas that make it difficult to follow the distinct trends clearly. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing figures that overlap or cross over. This level of organisation and cohesion aligns with Band 5.5, leaning towards Band 5.0 due to the mechanical use of cohesive devices and lack of smooth progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate basic information about trends, using terms such as 'upward trajectory', 'rose steadily', and 'surpassed'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'number of visiting', 'slightly decline' instead of slight decline, 'increase slightly' (tense inconsistency), and 'a gain of just 1.5 million number of visitors'. Word choice is sometimes imprecise or repetitively incorrect. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5, reflecting a limited yet minimally adequate range with noticeable inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex forms contain grammatical errors. Examples include tense inconsistencies and awkward syntax: 'the highest number of tourists staying on island at the beginning of the period, while staying on cruise ships was the lowest and it figure surpassed', 'who stays on island in end of the period', and 'its figure increase slightly'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on clauses separated by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops. Frequent errors in grammar and verb forms cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this response firmly at Band 5.0.
