Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and reporting the main features of the line graph. The student correctly identifies the overall upward trend of total visitors and mentions key data points such as the final figure of 3.5 million in 2017. However, there are some inaccuracies and confusion in the reporting of specific trends; for instance, the text claims a downward trend for cruise ship visitors ('While the downard trend in the numbers of visitors stay on the cruise ship'), whereas the graph clearly shows cruise ship visitors rising significantly from 0.25 million in 2010 to 20 million (likely meant as 2 million) in 2017. Additionally, the overview contains contradictory or confusing statements regarding the trends of the individual categories. These lapses in data accuracy and interpretation prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text is organized into paragraphs with a clear introduction and body paragraphs, attempting to guide the reader through the data. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Overall', and 'On the other hand' are employed to connect ideas. However, paragraphing and referencing are sometimes faulty or mechanical. The body paragraphs are somewhat jumbled, and sentences like 'As you see the in 2016 the total visitior value hugely jump' disrupt the logical flow. Furthermore, pronoun referencing and transitions between sentences can be awkward, making the progression less smooth than required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to task 1, such as 'significant upward trend', 'peak', and 'tenure'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'caribbean' (capitalization), 'significant' (used as 'an significant'), 'Caribbran', 'downard', 'visitior', and 'bwloe'. Word choices and collocations are occasionally imprecise or unnatural, such as 'the visitors stay on island start' and 'with rose up trend'. These errors indicate a limited control of word formation and spelling, capping the score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions (e.g., 'The graph illustrates the number of tourists who were visiting...'). However, the text is heavily impacted by frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. Examples include article errors ('an significant upward trend', 'the cruise ship'), tense inconsistencies ('starts', 'goes', 'starts with', 'with rose up'), and prepositional slips ('stay on cruise ship'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are not in the majority.
