Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between the two categories of tourists. The candidate provides an overview in the second paragraph mentioning the overall rising trend. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies and confusion in data reporting; for instance, the writer states that visitors staying on cruise ships overtook the other mode in the mid-period of 2015 and 2016, whereas the graph shows cruise visitors surpassed island-stay visitors in 2014 and remained higher thereafter. Furthermore, there is a stray reference to the year 2007 which does not appear in the graph. Overall, the main trends are adequately captured, placing this response at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each tourist group. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In 2010', and 'In compare'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the awkward transition 'ln compare' and the dense run-on structure in the final body paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression within the final paragraph is slightly hindered by the cluttered sentence structure. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The candidate attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a data summary, using terms like 'rising trend', 'abrupt increase', and 'consistent'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'count of tourists that made a visit to particular Caribbean island', 'half of million', 'most availed option', and 'gradually fall in numbers'. Spelling and morphological issues also appear, such as 'strated' instead of 'started' and 'over-took'. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey the general message, these inaccuracies limit the score to a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('tourists that made a visit') and temporal clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several structural and agreement errors throughout the text, including article omissions ('to particular Caribbean island'), incorrect prepositions ('in numbers'), and tense inconsistencies. For instance, 'started from quarter of million which slightly rise to half of million' mixes past and present tenses incorrectly. While communication is not severely impeded, frequent non-systematic errors keep the grammar score at Band 5.5.
