Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all major trends shown in the graph, such as the overall growth and the distinct trajectories of tourists staying on cruise ships versus those staying on the island. However, there are notable factual inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the student states that cruise ship tourist numbers experienced 'a slight decline by the year of 2010' when describing data points between 2010 and 2011, and writes that total visitors went 'from 1 to 3.5' by the end of the year, which is confusingly phrased. The overview is also rather weak, lacking a clear summary of the overall trend. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, aligning with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response attempts a logical layout by separating the introduction, an overview paragraph, and the body details. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the overall progression is difficult to follow due to poor linking and abrupt shifts between categories. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting sentences with 'Later' or 'By the end of the year' repetitively without establishing clear temporal connections. Referencing is also confusing at times, making the sequence of events hard to track. This level of organization and cohesive control corresponds to a Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent awkward formulations such as 'numeral of tourists' instead of 'number of tourists', 'prefferd' (spelling error), and 'Integer of tourists'. While the student attempts less common expressions like 'massive rise' and 'significant growth', word choices are often inappropriate or unnatural, such as 'maintained to make it's numbers'. There are also spelling errors ('incresed', 'prefferd'). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts contain noticeable grammatical errors. Examples include 'The graph illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error), 'trends of total tourists experienced' (awkward collocation and subject formulation), and punctuation/apostrophe misuse in 'it's numbers'. Frequent errors in verb tense and preposition usage can cause some difficulty for the reader. Although meaning is generally retrievable, the control over grammar falls short of Band 6, making a Band 5 score appropriate.
