Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying data points for visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total numbers across several years. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as misreading absolute visitor numbers (in millions) as percentages (e.g., writing '0%' and '0.5%' instead of 0.25 and 0.5 million). Furthermore, some figures reported, like the final total of '3%', do not accurately reflect the visual data where the total reaches 3.5 million in 2017. While an overview is attempted, it is overly simplistic and vague ('a lot of tourists came here to visit'). Consequently, the response achieves a Band 5.0 for addressing the task only partially and containing noticeable data misinterpretations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organized into four brief paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body details, and an overall summary. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, and the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and poor cohesion. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, with excessive reliance on disconnected sentences starting with dates or temporal markers like 'In 2013' and 'As, in 2010'. Referencing is also weak, making it difficult at times to follow how ideas relate to one another. There is no clear, overarching logical progression guiding the reader through the data comparisons. This performance aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors, where some organization is present but overall progression is lacking and cohesive devices are inadequate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'tourists', 'visit', 'island', and 'ratio'. There is an inappropriate use of statistical terms, notably substituting 'ratio' for absolute numbers or millions throughout the essay. Attempts at less common vocabulary are minimal, and spelling errors occur, such as 'inreasing' instead of 'increasing'. Word choice is frequently inaccurate, as seen in phrases like 'the overall ratio of the tourists... was good' and 'increased very well'. This restricts the lexical range to a minimally adequate level, reflecting the criteria for Band 5.0, where vocabulary is limited, repetitive, and marred by noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., '2010 to 2011,the ratio'), as well as awkward phrasing like 'As, the ratio of visitors... was same'. Grammatical accuracy is weak, with errors occurring across multiple sentences, including subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect verb forms ('The line graph illustrate'). Although basic meaning is generally communicated, the high frequency of structural and mechanical errors prevents the text from reaching a higher band, making Band 4.5 or 5.0 appropriate. Awarding 5.0 reflects a mix of simple forms with frequent errors that cause some difficulty.
