Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all three data series across the years provided, satisfying the basic requirements of Task 1. An overview is attempted at the beginning, but it lacks clarity and precision, simply listing the categories rather than highlighting key trends. While the response mentions general movements, such as visitors staying on cruise ships increasing overall, the specific figures provided often contain inaccuracies when compared to the visual data (for example, stating that visitors staying on cruise ships were 0.3 million in 2010 and 2012, whereas the chart indicates 0.25 million). Furthermore, the approach tends to be a fragmented list of data points rather than a well-synthesized report with clear comparisons. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, representing an attempt at structuring an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview/conclusion section. However, the logical progression is weak. The overview is placed awkwardly at the very beginning of the first paragraph without summarizing the main overarching trends effectively. Cohesive devices are minimal and repetitive (e.g., 'In 2010 and 2012...', 'In 2011 and 2013...'), leading to a mechanical and list-like flow of information rather than a cohesive discussion of trends. Paragraphing is disjointed, and referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear. Therefore, the organization meets the criteria for Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'visitors', 'staying', 'increase', and 'same'. Phrases such as 'include staying on cruise ships, staying on island and total number of visitors' demonstrate limited control over word choice and phrasing. There are also unnatural collocations and awkward word forms, such as 'from past eight years' instead of 'over the past eight years'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of tourism data, it lacks the range, precision, and flexibility required for higher bands, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Visitors staying on cruise ships only decrease in year 2012') and missing prepositions or articles ('reach to two million visitors', 'in year 2013'). Sentences describing numerical data often lack proper structure (e.g., 'In 2010 and 2012 it had same visitors 0.3 million'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate that complex structures are frequently faulty, which aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.
