Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and data points from the graph, mentioning the total visitors, cruise ship passengers, and those staying on the island. However, there are some inaccuracies and vague statements in data reporting. For instance, the statement that in 2012 the number of total visitors increased to 1.5 is slightly inaccurate based on the data (1.5 is correct for 2012, but the text phrasing is slightly disjointed), and some data points like '0.3 million' for cruise ships in 2010 (actual 0.25) contain approximations that are acceptable, but the overall summarization lacks a sharp, cohesive overview of the entire dataset. The overview sentence is grammatically weak and poorly formulated. Consequently, this performance aligns with Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0 for covering the basic requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, which shows an attempt at logical structure (introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different categories). However, the progression is often hindered by repetitive and mechanical transitional phrases such as 'as the time passed' and 'as the time continues'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty due to run-on sentences and awkward conjunctions. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are overused in a repetitive manner. This meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'visitors', 'island', 'graph', 'rises', and 'downfall'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('vistors', 'criuse', 'niumber') and awkward word choices ('tremendous growth', 'huge amount'). Attempts to use less common vocabulary are limited and often inaccurate. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning, the frequency of lexical errors places this response in Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions, subject-verb agreement issues ('different people visiting... is', 'number of visitor staying has been to a tremendous growth'), and incorrect verb tenses ('remain' instead of 'remained'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing full stops and run-on sentences. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 performance.
