Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by reporting the overall total number of visitors in 2010 and 2017, as well as breaking down the data into visitors staying on cruise ships and staying on the island. However, the response lacks a fully developed and coherent overview of the main trends. There are several inaccuracies and awkward phrasings when reporting specific figures, such as stating that 'the highest number of visitors visit in the Caribbean island is a 3.5 millions in the 2017'. The selection of data points is somewhat random rather than structured logically to highlight major trends like the steady growth of total visitors or the contrasting patterns between cruise ship and island-stay tourists. Overall, the task is only partially addressed, which aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short paragraphs attempting an introduction, an overview, and body details, but the logical progression and overall flow are weak. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as 'Firstly, ... secondly, ... furthermore, ... therefore,', which feels mechanical rather than natural. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of smooth transitional phrases between sentences makes the progression choppy. Although paragraphing is attempted, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty, leading to a score of 5.0 according to the official criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a very limited and repetitive vocabulary, relying heavily on basic terms like 'number of tourists', 'visitors', 'highest', and 'lowest'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations throughout the text, such as 'exceptional Caribbean island' instead of 'a particular Caribbean island', and grammatical infelicities like 'numbers of the tourists'. Less common vocabulary is virtually absent, and spelling or word-choice errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise intent. This performance is consistent with a Band 5 for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'the numbers of the tourists ... is', incorrect verb forms such as 'tourists visit in Caribbean island is a 1 millions visitors', and missing articles or preposition errors ('in the 2017', 'visit there'). Punctuation is also problematic with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5 grammar profile.
