Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all the main parts of the task by identifying the overarching trends and selecting key data points, such as the rise in total visitors from 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017. An overview is present, noting the significant increase in total visitors and the relative stability of island-staying visitors. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in quoting specific figures, such as stating that visitors staying on the island started at 0.7 million when the graph shows 0.75 million, and mentioning 'november' which is irrelevant to the yearly data. Despite these minor data reading errors, the key features are generally well reported, placing the response solidly within the Band 6.0 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is hindered by a lack of proper punctuation and capitalization, as many sentences run together without adequate full stops or commas (e.g., 'after few years, while the numbers...'). Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or incorrectly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the dense block of text in the second half of the essay makes the structure difficult to follow. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall mechanical execution of cohesion limits the score to Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'significantly', 'remained stable', and 'rose'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'bellow' instead of 'below', 'caribbean' lacking a capital letter, 'viditors' instead of 'visitors', and 'come down' instead of 'came down'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic verbs like 'grow up' and 'go up'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, making this performance representative of Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conjunctions like 'while' and 'as'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences ('in 2010...', 'from 2013...'), incorrect verb tense usage ('it come down', 'it keep going up'), and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the high frequency of basic structural and punctuation inaccuracies prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
