Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main trends on the line graph, correctly identifying that the overall number of tourists increased. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies regarding the data provided in the chart. For instance, the student states that the graph goes from 2010 to 2020, whereas it ends in 2017. Furthermore, many of the specific data points cited (such as cruise ship visitors being 1 million in 2014 and 1.3 million in 2015) do not match the visual data, and the text includes irrelevant speculation (e.g., 'because people like to travel in different places'). The response is presented as a single massive block of text without proper paragraphing. These issues limit the score to Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response suffers from a lack of clear organization and paragraphing, being written entirely as one single, dense block of text. Cohesive devices are frequently misused or awkward, such as 'On the other side,' 'On contrast,' and 'Thus in 2017'. The logical progression is obscured by run-on sentences and a lack of clear transitions between different data series. Although there is an attempt at an introduction and a concluding remark, the overall structure fails to meet the requirements for clear logical sequencing. This performance aligns with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for some overall coherence of thought, but better represented at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'substantially', 'fluctuating', 'oscillation', and 'augmentation', but their usage is frequently unnatural or inaccurate within the context of data reporting (e.g., 'effecting rate of tourists', 'working capacity', 'inhabitants'). There are also noticeable issues with word forms, such as 'visitors stayed on cruise ships' instead of 'staying'. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey a basic topic, the frequent awkward collocations and lexical errors prevent the score from reaching Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but it is heavily marred by frequent grammatical errors, run-on sentences, and poor punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('illustrates number of tourists'), incorrect tense usage ('its started increasing'), and fused sentences ('...grow sharply and eventually became the larger group, the visitors stayed...'). Many complex structures are faulty, which strains the reader's comprehension. Because errors are frequent and impede smooth communication at times, the grammar fits the Band 5.0 descriptor profile.
