The line graph displays the number of visitors visited a particular Caribbean island from 2010 to 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the graph, noting the overall upward movement of the total and general changes in the two categories. However, the response contains significant factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that visitors staying on the island increased to 2 millions in 2017 and confuses cruise ship visitors with island stay visitors in the body paragraphs, frequently misquoting figures (e.g., stating the total reached 3.5 millions in 2013, whereas the chart shows that occurred in 2017). Furthermore, the overview is contradictory and inaccurate, claiming that visitors staying on cruise ships increased while those on the island decreased, which does not accurately reflect the actual visual data where both categories ultimately rose over the period. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for different categories. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow due to confusing referencing and structural flaws. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'Therefore,' which does not logically connect the overview sentences, and 'In contrast,' which is misused in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion breaks down frequently because of grammatical errors and inaccurate data reporting, making the logical relationships between ideas hard to discern.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'visitors,' 'stayed,' and 'increased.' There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'flactuated,' 'platuead,' and 'continuosly.' Attempts to use less common vocabulary or collocation fail due to inaccuracies, and phrases like '0.3 millions of visitors' reveal persistent errors with pluralisation and numerical expressions. The lexical range is barely adequate to communicate the basic topic, but errors frequently impede clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent, severe grammatical errors throughout the text, including passive voice errors ('the visitors stayed on cruise ships were increased'), missing prepositions, tense confusion ('before raised to'), and incorrect verb forms ('before went up'). Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences and a lack of control over subordinate clauses. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and distort meaning.
