Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates how many tourists visited a Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017, showing the total number of visitors alongside those who stayed on the island and those who stayed on cruise ships.

Overall, the graph demonstrates the million of visitors who has visited Caribbean island. The highest values of visitors who stayed on cruise ships are exactly 2 million and lowest figures are 1.5 million who stayed on island. Additionally, the total number of visitors are approximately 3.5 million.

In 2010, island welcomed 1 million visitors in total.Of these, around 0.75 million stayed on the island, while only about 0.25 million stayed on cruise ships. The number of island stays then climbed rapidly to reach roughly 1.5 million in 2013, after which it remained relatively stable until the end of the period.By contrast, cruise ship stays increased steadily from 2013 onwards and rose to a peak of about 2 million in 2017. They surpassed island stays between 2015 and 2016.

The total figure followed the same upward pattern, growing gradually to around 2.7 million in 2015 and levelling off in 2016, before rising sharply to 3.5 million in 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the line graph. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the broader picture. Key data points, such as the starting figures in 2010 and the final figures in 2017, are correctly identified, and meaningful comparisons are made, such as noting that cruise ship stays surpassed island stays between 2015 and 2016. However, the overview contains some slightly awkward phrasing and unsupported absolute statements about single points in time rather than general trends. Nevertheless, the requirements of the task are well covered, and the data is reported accurately against the visual reference.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear logical organization with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and well-structured body paragraphs detailing the temporal progression of the data. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Additionally', 'In 2010', 'while only about', and 'By contrast'. Paragraphing is logical, separating the general overview from the specific chronological breakdown. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph two is slightly disjointed internally, listing isolated data points rather than a cohesive summary of overall trends. Overall, the flow and progression are logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing functional terms related to graph analysis such as 'climbed rapidly', 'remained relatively stable', 'increased steadily', and 'rising sharply'. However, there are some lexical and grammatical infelicities in the overview paragraph, such as 'demonstrates the million of visitors who has visited Caribbean island', which contains a pluralization and article error. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of success. Spelling and word choice are generally adequate and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as 'while only about 0.25 million stayed on cruise ships' and 'after which it remained relatively stable'. There are several grammatical errors, particularly in the overview section, such as 'the million of visitors who has visited' (subject-verb agreement and article omission) and 'total number of visitors are approximately' (subject-verb agreement with plural/singular nouns). However, complex structures are used with moderate success later in the text, and the majority of sentences in the body paragraphs are grammatically sound, meaning communication is rarely impeded.
