Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by describing trends in the provided line graph regarding tourists visiting a Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. However, the data reporting contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations. For instance, the text claims that '2M tourist go to see Caribbean island by traveling on boats from river' and mentions 'camping on island,' neither of which are supported by the chart data which specifically tracks 'visitors staying on cruise ships' and 'visitors staying on island.' The overview is also very weak, lacking a clear summary of the overall trajectory. Consequently, the response falls into Band 4.0 because the information reported is often inaccurate and misrepresents the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall organization and logical progression are hindered by weak structuring and confusing transitions. Sentences such as 'Overall, the surge was in 2017, most of the visitors visits the island, while some of them visits by sitting on cruise ships...' lack clarity and logical coherence. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the misused 'althrough' and repetitive sentence openings. Furthermore, referencing is unclear at times, making it difficult to follow which data category the student is discussing. This level of organisation aligns with Band 4.0 descriptors, where information and ideas are not arranged coherently throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with numerous word-form and spelling errors throughout the text (e.g., 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'vists' instead of 'visits', 'althrough' instead of 'although', 'ther' instead of 'their', and 'icreased' instead of 'increased'). The student attempts to use less common vocabulary or paraphrase the task prompt, but these attempts result in inaccurate phrasing and unnatural collocations, such as 'visitors visits by sitting on cruise ships'. Because the lexical range is narrow and frequent errors strain the reader's understanding, the response meets the criteria for Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak, with very limited structural variety and persistent, major errors. The response contains numerous basic grammatical mistakes, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('the line graph illustrate', 'most of the visitors visits'), tense inconsistencies, and incorrect prepositions ('visits by staying on island'). Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty and obscure meaning. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on clauses linked improperly by commas rather than full stops or correct conjunctions. These frequent errors that distort meaning place the response firmly in Band 4.0.
