Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the categories provided in the graph. The overview successfully identifies the general trends, noting that the total number and cruise ship visitors increased while island stay visitors fluctuated. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, stating that the total number of visitors was 'the highest' is vague and imprecise for a comparative task. Furthermore, the details contain minor data misinterpretations, such as describing the 2015 total as 2.7 million when the graph shows approximately 2.75 million, and minor inaccuracies regarding the island-stay category's trajectory. To reach a higher band, the response should provide more precise reporting of the figures and ensure all trends are fully articulated without inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Information and ideas are generally organized logically, starting with a broad summary and moving into specific data categories. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The use of transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' is inappropriate here, as these are used to present opposing arguments rather than separate data series in a chart. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be managed more effectively to separate the distinct demographic groups cleanly. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to use more natural cohesive devices suited to describing data and ensure seamless logical transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the general information and trends shown in the graph. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuations', 'significantly', and 'dramatically', though some word choices and collocations are slightly inaccurate, such as 'proportion of visitors' when referring to raw numbers of people, and 'total numer'. There are also minor spelling slips, such as 'rosed' instead of 'rose' and 'ramaining'. Communication is not impeded by these lexical inadequacies, and the meaning remains clear. To progress to a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider range of precise lexical items and demonstrate better control over word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and time clauses (e.g., 'after remaining stable till 2011, it increased'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as comma splices ('...visitor in 2017. Furthermore, the visitors...'), incorrect verb forms ('were roughly around 0.3 million', 'tourist visiting', 'visitors visited'), and missing articles ('in Caribbean island'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are clear. To move to the next band, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over subject-verb agreement and article usage.
