Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the graph by reporting data for overall visitors, cruise ship passengers, and island stay visitors across the period. However, the report presents a limited selection of details and contains inaccuracies or over-generalised summaries, such as claiming that the number of visitors staying on the island 'changed very little' or 'almost increased little', which misses some of the noticeable fluctuations seen between 2010 and 2017. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat basic, consisting of isolated statements rather than a fully developed summary of the overarching trends. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide a clearer, more comprehensive overview of all major trends and ensure that all key data points are reported accurately without overlooking significant movements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting to divide information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to different visitor categories. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the linking of ideas relies heavily on repetitive and simplistic connectors and time markers like 'In 2010', 'In comparison', and 'it continued'. Paragraphing is also somewhat fragmented, with the introduction and overview lumped together in a short, disjointed block. Referencing and cohesive devices are inadequate at times, resulting in a mechanical feel. To improve coherence, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that paragraphs have distinct, logical roles with clear progression throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. For instance, words like 'illustrate' lack subject-verb agreement, 'meaured' and 'millon' contain spelling errors, and awkward phrasing such as 'highest increased' or 'more increased' demonstrates a lack of control over collocation and lexical precision. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to data reporting, but frequent slips cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire and use vocabulary with greater accuracy and appropriateness, avoiding repetitive use of basic verbs like 'increase' and ensuring correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at past-tense reporting that are marred by errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement ('The line graph illustrate'), missing articles ('staying on island', 'started 0.25 million'), incorrect prepositions, and faulty verb forms ('reached increased', 'remained no changed'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with multiple missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and numerous spacing errors around punctuation marks. Because complex structures are either absent or frequently faulty, and errors occur with high frequency across basic grammatical patterns, the writing remains constrained at this level. Improving grammatical control requires consistent practice with simple past tense verbs, articles, and sentence boundaries.
