Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting the main categories, including visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total. However, the information is only partially and mechanically presented, leading to under-developed descriptions of the trends. For instance, the opening sentence awkwardly tries to incorporate the categories directly into the introduction. While an overview is attempted, it lacks clarity in its comparisons, and some of the data points mentioned lack sufficient precision or contextual integration. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a clearer, more fully developed overview of the main trends without getting bogged down in fragmented data points, ensuring all highlighted figures align more precisely with the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting to divide information into paragraphs, but there is a lack of clear progression throughout the response. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the phrase 'However, in the other hand', which blends two distinct transitional expressions. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which category is being discussed between sentences. Paragraphing is introduced, but internal transitions within paragraphs are weak. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of accurate cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly, ensure precise referencing pronouns connect clearly to their antecedents, and establish a logical sequence of information from the general overview to specific details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable constraints in word choice and collocation. The student relies on repetitive phrasing such as 'number of tourists', 'visitors staying on island', and 'visitors staying on cruise ships', rather than employing synonyms or paraphrasing. There are also inaccuracies in word formation and choice, such as using 'range' when discussing quantities, and awkward expressions like 'visitors rate highest'. These lexical shortcomings occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, using more precise terminology to describe statistical trends (such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable') and demonstrating greater control over collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to ungrammatical constructions such as 'whose visitors staying on cruise ships' and 'visitors number had 2 million'. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'had starting point highest about 0.75 millions its increased'. These recurring errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer needs to practice forming complex sentences accurately, paying close attention to subject-verb agreement, proper auxiliary verb usage, and the correct application of tense forms when describing past chronological data.
