Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting the data for visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total figures between 2010 and 2017. However, the overview is extremely weak and unclear, consisting of fragmented phrases ('Overall the total number of vistors are increase gradually with the time period then the vistors staying on island and cruise ship') that fail to adequately summarise the main trends. While some data points are correctly identified, such as the total reaching 3.5 million in 2017, the ideas are overall limited and under-developed, meaning the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you need to provide a clear, coherent overview statement at the beginning or end of your report that highlights the overall trends and major contrasts without getting bogged down in individual figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the report, with separate sections attempting to cover the different categories of tourists, but there is no clear overall progression due to poor linking and referencing. The text is largely written as a single dense block of writing with inadequate and sometimes inaccurate cohesive devices. For instance, the transition 'while in 2013 to 2016' is misused, and referencing is faulty throughout, such as 'they number decreased' and 'they show contious increase'. Paragraphing is virtually absent, as the body of the text runs together into one massive paragraph. To reach a higher level, you must structure your report into clear paragraphs—such as an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs for key features—and use cohesive devices accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are numerous spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'vistors' instead of 'visitors', 'contious' instead of 'continuous', and awkward phrasing like 'it gain there visitors'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, relying heavily on repeating basic terms like 'number of visitors' and 'staying on' without demonstrating flexibility or precision. To improve this area, you should expand your range of reporting verbs and nouns (e.g., using terms like 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'surge' instead of repeating 'increased' and 'remain same'), and carefully check your spelling and word forms before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined clumsily with commas or basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that impede understanding. Examples include subject-verb agreement and tense errors like 'The graph display', 'the total number of vistors are increase', and 'the visitors staying on island is'. Furthermore, punctuation is weak, with missing full stops, incorrect capitalization, and spacing errors around commas. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate a better mix of complex grammatical structures with accurate verb tenses, proper subject-verb agreement, and correct article usage.
