Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, as there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data and confusing the two visitor categories. While you attempt to provide an overview and cover the main trends in the line chart, some details are contradictory or misread. For instance, you mix up the statistics for cruise ship passengers and visitors staying on the island, stating that the former peaked at 2 million in 2017 while later confusing which group was which in the body paragraphs. To move to a higher level, you need to ensure that the data selected and reported is accurate, and that comparisons between categories are clearly differentiated and fully supported by the visual prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the structure of the essay, with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the categories. However, there is no clear overall progression due to confusion in the data and repetitive referencing. Cohesive devices are sometimes used, such as 'In general' and 'According to the graph', but transitional phrases are often mechanically applied or inaccurate, such as 'than grow' instead of 'then grow'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is confused. To improve, ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with clear progression and that referencing words clearly point to the correct data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You attempt some less common vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'significantly' and 'peaked', but these attempts are often marred by noticeable errors in word form and choice, such as 'increase grammatically' (likely meaning 'gradually' or 'dramatically') and 'an downward' instead of 'a downward trend'. There are also frequent issues with basic word forms and collocations, which cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, you should build a wider range of appropriate lexical items for describing data, ensuring correct word forms and precise collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent reliance on simple constructions and basic subject-verb patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and verb tense inconsistencies, for example, 'number of tourist who visiting' and 'the visitors staying on the island was accordingly'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement errors are common throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, you need to produce a better mix of simple and complex structures with significantly fewer grammatical errors.
