Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by attempting to outline overall trends and specific figures from the chart, such as mentioning the total number of visitors and the breakdown between cruise ship and island stays. However, some of the data points reported contain inaccuracies when compared against the visual data. For instance, the student states that the total number reached 3.5 million in 2015 and remained stable until 2017, whereas the chart shows total visitors rising to 3.5 million specifically in 2017. Furthermore, the description of visitors staying on the island contains a few vague figures, such as stating it rose from 0.7 million to 1.5 million. While an overview is present, key features are not fully or accurately developed throughout, placing this aspect in the middle band range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, dividing the introduction, overview, and specific body paragraphs logically. The student attempts to use logical sequencing words and transitional markers such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at', and 'Turning to'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always completely smooth. For example, some sentences are fragmented, such as 'Turning to visitors staying on ships .The figure...', where punctuation and spacing errors disrupt the natural flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, helping to bridge the gap into the higher band while still showing some minor mechanical flaws in cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to graph description such as 'significantly', 'moderately', and 'remaind stable'. However, the response is impacted by noticeable spelling mistakes and word choice inaccuracies, including 'carribben' instead of Caribbean, 'totale' instead of total, 'increas' instead of increased, and 'remaind' instead of remained. Additionally, the phrase 'the amount of tourists' is used instead of 'the number of tourists'. These spelling and word-choice errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to this level, as greater precision and accuracy are required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like past tense clauses and relative descriptions. However, there are frequent errors in grammatical patterns, punctuation, and spacing, such as '1 millions' instead of '1 million', missing articles, and awkward spacing around periods and numbers like '2.5 million 2014'. While some sentences are clear and communicate the intended meaning, the persistent presence of basic structural and punctuation slips means that error-free sentences are not consistent enough to secure a higher band score.
