Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the data. An overview is attempted in the introduction, noting that the total number of tourists increased while the categories of visitors fluctuated or grew. However, the details provided are sometimes slightly underdeveloped or repetitive, particularly in tracking the exact figures for visitors staying on the island versus those on cruise ships. For instance, the statement that three-quarters of tourists stayed on the island in 2010 is inaccurate based on the visual data, where island stayers accounted for 0.75 million out of a total 1 million, which is actually three-quarters, but the phrasing around categories and totals contains some confusion. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the key trends are adequately covered, placing the response solidly within the mid-range for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'After that' are used to structure the response, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or are awkwardly punctuated, such as 'Secondly. the toursits'. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the overall trends from the specific breakdown of cruise and island visitors. Referencing and progression are generally clear, but occasional clunky phrasing and repetitive sentence openings slightly disrupt the smooth flow of information, preventing the response from reaching a higher level of cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends with terms such as 'increased drastically', 'remained constant', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'illsutrates', 'Carribean', 'tne', 'toursits', 'quater', 'vsitors', and 'tsayedon'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the lexical score. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data description, but slips in spelling and imprecise lexical control highlight the need for greater accuracy and proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and time-dependent structures. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('number of visitor', 'total visitors'), incorrect verb forms ('visitor staying', 'toursits grew up to'), and punctuation mistakes ('Secondly. the toursits'). Prepositional usage also shows lapses, as seen in 'stayed on island' instead of 'on the island'. Although these errors occasionally cause minor difficulty, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting a mix of controlled structures and frequent basic slips characteristic of this level.
