Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph, including the total visitor numbers and the breakdown between cruise ship passengers and those staying on the island. An appropriate overview is provided, noting the division into two groups and the overall upward trend from 1 million to 3.5 million visitors. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the details regarding individual years and specific data points, such as mentioning that the figure 'remains unchanged in 2016', are slightly underdeveloped or lack deeper comparative analysis. Nevertheless, all key trends are accurately identified and supported with figures from the graph, positioning the response well within the target band for task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical structure that moves from an introduction and overview to body paragraphs detailing the overall total and the two separate accommodation categories. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different features of the chart. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional phrases and referencing that could flow more naturally. For example, the use of 'Looking at the detail' and 'Meanwhile, for both accomidations' feels slightly abrupt. Additionally, pronoun referencing and sentence transitions occasionally lack seamless integration, resulting in a somewhat disjointed progression between individual data points, which is characteristic of this level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'dramatically', 'steadily rose', and 'approximately'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'vistors', 'crusie', and 'accomidations'. Furthermore, collocation is occasionally awkward, such as 'for both accomidations at cruise ships'. These errors do not impede communication, as the reader can easily follow the intended meaning, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score due to recurring lexical slips and a lack of precision in word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and comparative structures. There are some errors in grammar and tense consistency, such as 'the total number of tourists are around' instead of 'were', and 'dramatically roses' instead of 'rose'. Preposition usage is also occasionally faulty, as seen in 'accommodations at cruise ships'. Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple structures remain clear and understandable. A wider variety of error-free complex structures is needed to move beyond this level.
