Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview and some data points, but containing significant inaccuracies and mechanical reporting. While the student attempts to summarise the main features, the details provided are often confused or misaligned with the visual data. For instance, the statement that the total number of visitors rose gradually 'in just 6 years' while in 2017 the rate 'rise dramatically from 2.5 million to almost 3.5 million in just 1 year' reflects a limited and partially inaccurate reading of the graph's timeline and values. Furthermore, the breakdown of categories suffers from underdeveloped and unclear comparisons, resulting in a response that fails to present a fully clear or accurate picture of the tourist trends between 2010 and 2017.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organisation through basic transitional phrases like 'Overall' and 'Regarding total number of visitors', but it lacks a clear overall progression. The paragraphing is rudimentary, with the body of the response crowded into dense blocks where ideas are mechanically linked rather than logically sequenced. Cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or repetitive, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences ('While in 2017', 'Simultaneously', 'Lastly'), which disrupts the flow of information. Referencing and relationships between data points are not always clear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of trends across the different visitor categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'surged marginally', 'drastically', and 'esclate', but these attempts are marred by noticeable spelling errors ('volumn', 'Cribbean', 'aproximately', 'moderatly', 'esclate', 'continously') and awkward collocations. Word choice errors occur frequently, such as using 'explorers' instead of visitors or tourists, and misusing terms like 'rate' for absolute numbers. While communication is not entirely blocked, these persistent lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips restrict the response to a modest band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures and frequent grammatical errors. Simple sentence forms are managed with varying success, but attempts at complex sentences or describing past trends are often faulty. There are frequent errors in verb tense selection and consistency, such as 'they rises gradually' and 'explorers who were stayed on island increased', mixing present and past markers inappropriately. Additionally, errors in prepositions and article usage occur throughout the text. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control over grammatical structures.
