Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given line graph presents us the numbers for the tourists visiting a specific carribean island between 2010 and 2017.

The total number of visitors increased throughout the whole period. There were fluctuations in the number of visitors that stayed on the cruise ships but overall, the number increased. The number of visitors that stayed on the island also increased overall through the period.

In 2010, the total number of visitors were one million. The number accelerated at a high rate till the year 2015 to reach around 2.7 million. The total number of visitors remained same from 2015 to 2016 until it increased rapidly to end at 3.5 million in 2017.

In 2010, the number of visitors on cruise ships was approximately 0.25 million. Whereas, the visitors staying on island were around 0.75million. Anyways, in between 2015 and 2016 the number of visitors on cruise ships surpassed the number of those staying on island.

Overall, the total number of visitors increased throughout the time. In the end,the number of visitors on cruise ships got greater than the number of visitors staying on the island

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and reporting key data points, such as the total number of visitors reaching 3.5 million in 2017. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others, placing the response in the mid-range. While the overall trends for cruise ship and island visitors are noted, certain details are somewhat general or under-developed. For example, the student reports that the total number of visitors was one million in 2010 and mentions the crossover between the two categories of tourists, satisfying the basic requirements, but lacks a more precise breakdown of intermediate years for the separate categories. The inclusion of a concluding summary is helpful, though it slightly repeats earlier points rather than extending the analysis further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory statement to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate different aspects of the data, such as general trends in the second paragraph, total visitor figures in the third paragraph, and specific category comparisons in the fourth paragraph. However, cohesion is at times somewhat mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'Anyways' in the fourth paragraph are informal and inappropriate for an academic essay. Additionally, referencing and linking between sentences could be smoother to avoid a repetitive feel, particularly evident in the final concluding section which reiterates points already made without adding structural variety.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the main features of the line graph. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'accelerated at a high rate', 'surpassed', and 'fluctuations', which demonstrate an effort to vary language. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For instance, 'carribean' is misspelled with a double 'r', and 'numbers for the tourists' is an awkward phrasing compared to 'number of tourists'. Phrases like 'remained same' omit necessary articles. These minor lexical slips and occasional non-standard collocations do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of precision and natural control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses ('Visitors staying on island were around 0.75million. Anyways, in between...') and time-marker prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the total number of visitors were one million' (where 'number' is singular and requires 'was'), missing articles before singular nouns ('staying on island'), and inappropriate punctuation or capitalization slips. Complex sentence attempts are generally understandable, but control over grammatical patterns is inconsistent, meaning that while errors exist, they do not cause significant difficulty for the reader.
